leadership of the moment, the moment we find ourselves in and how to lead through that moment.
Their is in my mind 4 different perspective that are necessary for leaders to lead in a time such as this. Its hindsight, insight, foresight and Intuitions. So when you leading in a moment of crisis, you need to understand exactly what perspective you're looking at that moment through, well, how do you know you are leading at that moment of crisis. Well first there must be a collision, a confluence if you will, of several factors at the same time. Factor #1 necessary ingredient is you must be in an environment of extreme fear, people must be fearful. The reason they must be fearful is because people are often fearful as a function of danger, that is perceived, and danger is often perceived because of the unknown. That's why when you and I were growing up, we were always scared of the dark, there wasn't really anything malevolent about the dark but the fact that we didn't really know what was there.
Second necessary ingredient is uncertainty, in other words they have no predictive model to analyze the environment you are in, it must be an environment of deep uncertainty, where all the tools you have of analysis, cannot analyze that moment in time. Third necessary ingredient is there must be deeply embedded interest, and for these deeply embedded interest, it will highlight what is an acrimonious relationship if you will, across the different barricade, across different people representing different interest, sitting on competing sides of the same issues of those embedded interest and finally, And this is where I think most of the world find itself now. Is that you must be in rough terrain, this is terrain that doesn't allow for tested strategies or actions. It needs leaders who are BOLD and leaders who take action, during these moment then ,how to lead! well, you lead first based on how you see that moment, so how can you see that moment lets go back to those factors that i mentioned earlier. First you can see the moment through the Lens of hindsight, hindsight is what we know to be true because its already been, we already know it to be so. . Second lens is insight, its knowing what we know, what we learn from the information that we already have available. Insight by the way is fundamental, its your ability to deeply technically analyze the moment that we are in.. The next is foresight. foresight is what do we need to know about what is coming, in other words we know what's been, we know what is, so what do we need to know about what will be. The thing about foresight is its never a single thing, its generally going to be a number of scenarios that we are going to plan for, but notice how all of these are data based. The single most important element is the ingredient I like to add is this, all leader also have this ability to Rely on their intuition their GUT. What is intuition its quite simple, Intuition is what we know to be true absent all the data, You just know it to be so, with or without the rough data, with or without the evidence, you know it to be so. So in this moment, the moment of crisis we are all leading ourselves through I want to invitee you to practice looking at this moment through all 4 lens fundamentally. I also want to invite you to ensure that you are constantly landing at the foot of foresight, seeing things for what their going to be not what they are. You see its like that old expression says " the future is not what it use to be " and quite simply what that mean is these moments of disruption that we are living through, these moments of chaos ,change, ambiguity, uncertainty these moments of extreme fear all these moment breathes an opportunity for us to reimagine the future, see it differently and haven't seen it differently, have the courage to make it so.. So here is my question to you, what did you have planned for next year and how have the events for the past year shifted these plans. Now that you've answered that question, here is the most important one, what are you going to do, what is your angle of foresight?......... VT
